I took the course in Santa Fe but might move to Texas later this year. Will my certificate still count?

Answer

Hello Theresa, Great question. Defensive driving certificates are state-specific — your New Mexico completion would close out the case in New Mexico, but if you move to Texas, any future Texas ticket would need a Texas-approved course. A few practical notes: - Your New Mexico certificate stays valid for the citation it was issued for, regardless of where you live later - If you move, request a copy of your New Mexico driving record before transferring your license - We offer Texas-approved courses for any future Texas tickets New Mexico Defensive Driving Course Please let us know if you have any further questions!

Eligibility

I took the Albuquerque course in February. I heard the New Mexico MVD only removes 2 points per year. Is that right?

Answer

Hello Luis, Yes — New Mexico MVD allows a maximum 2-point reduction per 12-month period, and up to 6 points reduced per 3-year period, after completion of an approved defensive driving course. Practically: - If you had 4 points before the course, only 2 come off this year - You can take a refresher course in 12 months to remove another 2 if eligible - Maximum benefit over any 3-year window is 6 points total We report your completion electronically to MVD, usually within 24 hours, and the adjustment posts within 7-14 business days.
