Who needs the Class B ELDT Training Online course?
FMCSA's ELDT rule covers Class B just like Class A — if you're applying for your first Class B CDL, you must complete theory training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Our Class B ELDT online course is that theory requirement delivered fully online. Most Class B candidates are moving into straight-truck, dump-truck, transit bus, or delivery jobs where the vehicle is large but not articulated.
The rule also applies if you're upgrading from a non-commercial license directly to Class B without stopping at a learner's permit for long. The structural test for whether ELDT applies is whether the candidate is seeking their first CDL of any kind — anyone in that category falls under the rule regardless of how long they've held a regular driver's license. Drivers with prior CDL history before February 2022 are exempt from retroactive ELDT, but anyone applying fresh after the rule date is required to complete it.
For employers hiring Class B drivers, the ELDT requirement is part of the structural cost of bringing in new-to-CDL drivers. Companies running Class B fleets — refuse haulers, transit operators, ready-mix concrete suppliers, school bus operators, food-service distributors — typically integrate ELDT into their hiring pipeline by either reimbursing candidates who complete it or partnering with our commercial team to deliver it as part of an employer-funded training program. The investment is offset by the reliability gains from drivers who arrive with structured theory training rather than informal mentorship from existing drivers.
