Does the course include behind-the-wheel training?

Many endorsements (like Hazmat) only require theory because there's no on-road skills test specifically for them. The T endorsement is one of the endorsements where most states do require an on-road skills component because operating a multi-trailer combination is materially different from a single trailer. For BTW, we partner with CDL schools and carriers that operate double or triple combinations on a closed range and on approved public roads. The partner reports BTW completion to the FMCSA TPR alongside our theory completion, and your state DMV schedules the endorsement skills test once both are on file.

The vehicle-specific BTW requirement is structurally important for T because the handling characteristics of multi-trailer combinations can't be inferred from single-trailer experience. Even an experienced Class A driver with thousands of single-trailer miles will encounter handling phenomena — rearward amplification, lane-tracking variations, longer brake lag through the second trailer's air system — that need to be felt and managed rather than just understood theoretically. The BTW component validates the driver has internalized those handling differences before being authorized to operate multi-trailer equipment in revenue service.

For carriers running large doubles or triples operations, the BTW component often runs through carrier-internal training programs rather than commercial CDL schools. Major LTL carriers maintain their own training fleets and certified instructors because the equipment is specialized and the training can incorporate carrier-specific operational protocols alongside the federal training requirements. Our integration with carrier training programs allows the theory completion record and the carrier's BTW completion record to flow into the same TPR file for the driver, which simplifies regulatory documentation without changing operational delivery.
