Does the Class C ELDT include behind-the-wheel training?
FMCSA requires both theory and behind-the-wheel training for first-time Class C CDL applicants. Our online course covers the full theory side. For BTW, we partner with CDL schools that operate Class C-equivalent vehicles — small buses, shuttles, or hazmat-trained vehicles — for the in-person portion. The partner school reports BTW completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, alongside our theory completion.
Once both records are on file, your state DMV can schedule the Class C skills test. The two-component structure is the same federal requirement that applies to Class A and Class B, even though the vehicles are smaller. The reasoning is consistent — pure-online training can't validate vehicle operation, and the operational stakes (passengers or hazmat) make practical skill verification particularly important for Class C drivers despite the smaller vehicle scale.
The behind-the-wheel for Class C is typically shorter than for Class A or Class B because the vehicles are easier to operate. Most Class C BTW programs run 1 to 3 weeks rather than the longer timelines for heavier vehicles. This shorter BTW combined with the shorter theory means total Class C ELDT can often complete in 4 to 6 weeks for motivated students, which is meaningfully faster than Class A or Class B paths. The faster timeline is part of why Class C operations are sometimes the entry point for drivers who need to start commercial work quickly.
