Took the course 4 years ago — eligible again?
I took the New Jersey defensive driving course in 2022 for a Hackensack ticket. Can I take it again now?
Hello Diane, Thanks for asking. New Jersey allows the point-reducing benefit of defensive driving once every five years. Since your last completion was in 2022, you would be eligible again 5 years after that date. A couple of options if you are not yet eligible: - You can still take the course voluntarily — many New Jersey insurers offer a 5 percent discount for three years even without the point benefit - Wait until you cross the 5-year mark for full point benefit We can hold any enrollment until you confirm the date of your prior completion. Will the 2 points come back this year?
I had 4 points on my New Jersey record. I took the Newark defensive driving course in March. How fast will the 2 points be removed?
Hello Kareem, Good question. New Jersey allows a 2-point reduction every five years after completion of an approved defensive driving course. Here is how the timing works: - We electronically report your completion to the New Jersey MVC, usually within 24 hours - The MVC posts the 2-point reduction within 7-14 business days - Request a copy of your driving record after that window to confirm If the points have not been removed after 14 business days, reply with your New Jersey driver's license number and we will re-verify the submission.
