Is the Minnesota 10 percent discount automatic?

I keep seeing that Minnesota insurance companies have to give a 10 percent discount after defensive driving. Does it happen automatically?

Hello John, Almost — Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. §65B.28) requires auto insurers to provide a 10 percent discount on premiums for drivers 55 and older who complete an approved defensive driving course, but it is not automatic on the insurer's side. To activate it: - Email or upload your completion certificate to your auto insurer - Ask for written confirmation of the discount start date and 3-year expiration - Set a reminder to re-take the refresher course (shorter, 4 hours) before the 3 years end Drivers under 55 may still get a voluntary discount — worth asking your carrier directly.
